Course Description:

In most commercial applications, outdoor living spaces are a key amenity. A functional shade structure can add depth to storefronts, expand outdoor services, or improve the comfort of a patio space. Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate the types of material available for shade structures and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each option
in terms of durability and maintenance requirements.

  • Recognize how column style, end style, trim, and color affect the aesthetic of a shade structure.

  • Understand the benefits of off-site manufacturing.

  • Discuss shade as a key component in the design of outdoor spaces and building exteriors to
promote shared interaction, business goals, health, and wellness.

  • Explain the design issues that must be considered before starting a shade structure project to ensure the final space is accessible, comfortable, and safe.
